N47 Engine

The MINI 1.60 & 2.0D N47 engine is a diesel engine that BMW between 2006 & 2011 produced.

Unfortunately, many MINI owners have experienced engine failure with the N47 diesel engine. Engine failure in the MINI N47 engine is a common issue that many MINI owners have experienced. To avoid engine failure, it’s essential to maintain regular maintenance and have your MINI inspected by a qualified mechanic if you suspect any issues. Several options are available if you experience engine failure, including repair, replacement, or sale.

What Causes Engine Failure in the MINI or BMW N47 Engine?

Several factors can cause engine failure in the MINI 2.0D N47 engine, including:
  1. Timing Chain Tensioner Failure: The timing chain tensioner is responsible for keeping the timing chain tight and adequately tensioned. If this part fails, the timing chain can stretch and slip, causing significant damage to the engine.
  2. Timing Chain Stretch: Over time, the timing chain can stretch, which can cause it to jump a tooth on the camshaft sprocket. This can cause severe engine damage, including bent valves and damaged pistons.
  3. Camshaft Sensor Failure: The camshaft sensor is responsible for monitoring the position of the camshaft and relaying this information to the engine control module. If this sensor fails, the engine may not run properly and could even stall.

What to Do if Your MINI 1.6 or 2.0 Diesel N47 Engine Fails

If your MINI 1.6 or 2.0 N47 engine fails, you have several options:

  • Repair: If the engine failure is minor, you may be able to have it repaired. This can be expensive, but it can also be the best choice if you want to keep your MINI for a long time.
  • Replace: If the engine failure is severe, you may need to have the engine replaced. This can be costly, but it may be the best choice if your MINI is still under warranty.
  • Sell: If you’re no longer interested in owning a MINI, you may choose to sell the vehicle. You can sell it as is, or you can have the engine repaired or replaced first and then sell it.
